The Tin Man’s Journey to a Heart

Do you suspect you are without a heart? Watch the 2006 Jane Eyre miniseries and take the attached quiz to receive a conclusive answer.

I frequently watch love stories but rarely feel any compassion toward the protagonists. I have seen every Hallmark movie, teen soap, Korean drama, screwball comedy, “Golden Age” romance, and period piece. I remember Cher Horowitz more accurately than she remembers Mel Gibson, and know all ten things Kat Stratford hates about Patrick Verona. I watch many of these stories bi-annually and the only thing I feel is a bit more confident in my Norwegian and Korean. [1] Since I am not often emotionally invested, I concluded I must be without a heart.

Although I most enjoy period romances that pre-date the 20th century, I had not seen the 2006 production of Jane Eyre until sixteen months ago. How could someone that watched Lost in Austen six times miss such an important entry in the period drama canon? In the succeeding months, I viewed the miniseries four times and finally experienced feelings, including grief when it ended. Why was I so sad that I could not live in this series longer? What was wrong with me? Puzzled, I decided to develop a quiz to understand the source of my discomfort.

[1] This is hyperbole. I adore Home for Christmas and Do Do Sol Sol La La Sol. 10 stars, highly recommend.
